UPDATE: Preliminary identification made in Livermore Falls fire death

Fire Marshals say the body of 66-year-old Peter Dyer was found in his living room after his house in Livermore Falls caught fire

***UPDATE*** Although testing is not finished, the State Fire Marshal's Office has enough information to release the name of the man believed to have died in a fire in Livermore Falls. Sixty-six-year-old Peter Dyer was the renter of the home where he lived with his relatives. His body was found in the living room on the first floor. Fire Marshals say the fire started in that room and spread through the house. Due to the severity of the damage, Fire Marshals say they are unable to determine the cause of the fire.

LIVERMORE FALLS (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- One person was killed in a house fire Tuesday night in Livermore Falls, according to the State Fire Marshal's Office, but two boys are alive thanks to the actions of a police officer who helped save them from the house.

Flames were shooting out of the house on Main Street when Sgt. Vernon Stevens heard the call while on patrol shortly after 7 p.m.

Police Chief Ernest Steward said when Sgt. Stevens got to the house he saw two boys, ages 11 and 13, in a third-floor window. Sgt. Stevens urged the kids to jump.

The older boy jumped and Sgt. Stevens caught him. The younger boy jumped, but hit the overhang on the second floor and fell to the ground.

“He was really upset with himself that the second kid had gotten hurt." the chief said. He also pointed out that Stevens did what he felt needed to be done.

"He doesn't want the attention, he feels the kids were brave to jump out of the window in the first place.
The boys have both been released from the hospital.

The state fire marshal’s office is investigating what started the fire.
