NEWBURGH, Maine (NEWSCENTER) -- Hundreds of Service Men and Women and their families will have a brighter Christmas this year thanks to the generous support of tree farmers all across the state. Those Tree farmers donated christmas trees to the 'Trees for Troops' program, a collaborative effort between the tree farmers, Federal Express, and the Christmas Spirit Foundation. Thursday Members of the American Legion Post 201 in Dixmont joined with Fed-Ex workers, and workers at Piper Mountain Tree farm in Newburgh to loadthree hundredbalsam firs into the back of a truck. Those trees are headed to Fort Bragg.
"It's a heartwarming event every year, and its been going on for 8 years thanks to fed ex. We've done over 100 thousand trees over that period of time." explained Jim Corliss, owner of Piper Mountain Tree Farm.
'Trees for Troops' is a national program of which Maine tree farmers are involved. In total, about 17 thousand Christmas Trees will be shipped this year to 62 Military installations across the country.
