LINCOLN, New Hampshire (NEWS CENTER Maine) -- The National Weather Service confirms a tornado in northern New Hampshire, after a hiker posted video of the rotating thunderstorm on social media.
John Saunders was hiking Mt. Pemigewasett, just northwest of Lincoln, and recorded video of the rapidly rotating clouds.
What Saunders and many others missed at first glance was a small tornado that formed in the distance.
The National Weather Service says the tornado occurred briefly in a remote, wooded area.
Its estimated wind speed is 65 mph, rated EF-0, the lowest on the scale to five. The tornado was on the ground for less than a quarter mile. A warning was in effect at the time.
