AUBURN (NEWS CENTER Maine) – The average teacher in America spends about $479 out of his or her own pocket on school supplies. There are a few resources available to teachers in Maine, to help alleviate that cost.
The SHAREcenter is a non-profit for educators. Individuals or businesses donate supplies, such as notebooks, mugs, or even science equipment. The teachers can come in, and take whatever they want, according to the organization director.
The SHAREcenter is free for teachers, but not for school districts. Schools or school districts set up a membership with the SHAREcenter. Teachers cannot apply for a membership on their own.
Lisa Rodrigues, director of SHAREcenter, says school districts earn back their membership fee 20 to 30 times over.
