Suspect pursuit in Scarborough results in hold-in-place order for nearby school

Kyle Cassell, 27, of Westbrook was arrested on five outstanding warrants and additional charges from Tuesday's incident, police said.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — A man from Westbrook faces several charges after allegedly fleeing from police Tuesday in Scarborough, resulting in a hold-in-place order at a nearby elementary school.

Around 11 a.m., officers with the Scarborough Police Department tried to conduct a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle driven by a man with outstanding warrants, a news release from the police department said.

The suspicious vehicle did not stop, instead fleeing on Payne Road where it was later found abandoned in a business parking lot, police said. Officers were unable to locate the suspect with a K-9 track.

During this incident, the Eight Corners Primary School at 22 Mussey Rd. was put under an emergency hold-in-place order "out of an abundance of caution" and due to its close proximity to the pursuit.

A few hours later, officers were notified of a male matching the description of the suspect walking on Gorham Road in the area of Cumberland Way. The man fled into the woods when police attempted to make contact, the release stated. He was later found hiding in the woods following a K-9 track and assistance from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

The man was identified as 27-year-old Kyle Cassell of Westbrook. He was arrested on five outstanding warrants of theft, failure to appear on charges of unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, violating conditions of release, and operating on a suspended license, police said.

Cassell faces additional charges of failure to stop for a police officer, eluding, criminal speed, driving to endanger, reckless conduct, refusing to submit to arrest, and operating after suspension.
