STONINGTON, Maine — The Office of the Maine Attorney General is investigating after a Hancock County sheriff's deputy shot a Stonington man who allegedly drew his firearm following threats to burn down his home.
The Hancock County Regional Communications Center received a report around 3:50 p.m. on Saturday from a woman on Weed Field Road that her adult son, Erik-Thor Himpler, was threatening to burn down their house, according to a news release from the Hancock County Sheriff's Office.
Hancock County sheriff's deputy John Stanley responded and found Himpler walking along the road, the release stated. Stanley reportedly told Himpler to stop, but Himpler allegedly refused and raised a gun that he pulled from his waistband.
Stanley then shot Himpler, according to the release. Stanley and two other officers reportedly administered aid until paramedics arrived.
Himpler was brought to Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital and then Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
Stanley will be placed on administrative leave while the Maine attorney general's office investigates the use of deadly force, as is standard practice.
