State trooper injured in I-95 crash after woman falls asleep at wheel

The California woman, 38, allegedly fell asleep, causing her foot to press the accelerator and her vehicle to speed up uncontrollably and rear-end the cruiser.

SIDNEY, Maine — At about 11 p.m. Wednesday, Cpl. Garret Booth was traveling north on Interstate 95 in Sidney when a vehicle rear-ended his cruiser at a high rate of speed, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a release.

According to Moss, 34-year-old Keishaunna Tavares of San Diego, California, was operating a 2019 Kia Optima when she fell asleep, causing her foot to press the accelerator and her vehicle to speed up uncontrollably and rear-end the cruiser.

Booth reportedly suffered an arm injury and was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta for evaluation and was later released.

Moss said Tavares was not injured and was issued a citation for failing to maintain control of her vehicle.

Both vehicles were damaged and towed from the scene.

The Maine State Police Central Field Troop and Troop I were assisted by MaineDOT, Delta Ambulance, Sidney Fire/Rescue, and Ready Road Towing.

The investigation remains ongoing.
