State police investigating Fourth of July crash in Parsonsfield

Officials said a 23-year-old man crashed into another vehicle and a garage before abandoning the scene early Thursday morning.

PARSONSFIELD, Maine — State police are investigating a crash that happened Fourth of July morning in Parsonsfield.

In the early morning hours on Thursday, the Augusta Regional Communications Center received reports about an abandoned pickup truck and boat in the travel lane of Route 160 in Parsonsfield, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a release.

State troopers responded to the crash where they determined the driver of the blue 2009 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck, which had a 12-foot aluminum boat in the truck bed, had been traveling on Route 160 when they missed a turn and crashed into a parked vehicle and garage of a home.

"The driver then backed up and left the scene," Moss said. "Due to the extent of damage to the offending vehicle, the driver of the pick-up left a debris field to include the boat which fell out of the truck."

Moss said the driver, who was identified as 23-year-old Joshua Hermance of Parsonsfield, continued driving afterward, shredding the front driver's side tire until it completely separated from the rim.

"It was at this time that the operator abandoned his pickup and fled the scene," the release stated.

State police said Hermance is cooperating with the investigation and is charged with failure to give notice of accident by quickest means, failure to notify owner of property damage accident, failure to produce or return to scene of accident, and leaving scene of a property damage accident.

Hermance and the homeowner were not injured, Moss said.

State police are continuing to investigate.
