GRAY, Maine — The state fire marshal's office is investigating a basement fire that happened Tuesday afternoon at a home in Gray.

Shortly before 3 p.m., the Cumberland County Regional Communications Center received a report about a basement fire at 4 Pennell Lane, Gray Fire Rescue said in a news release.

Fire crews from several surrounding towns responded to the scene and discovered smoke in multiple areas of the home, according to the release. Gray Fire Chief Kurt Elkanich deemed it an "all hands" fire and ordered additional aid to come to the scene.

"A fire attack crew from Gray entered the building, located the fire in the basement and quickly brought it under control," the release stated. "With the assistance of our mutual aid partners, extensive work was done to ensure all hot spots were identified and made safe."

Fire officials said there was extensive damage to the basement and throughout the building there was smoke damage.

The resident of the home was not injured in the fire, but one cat died.

The state fire marshal's office was called to investigate the cause of the fire, the release said.

Fire crews from Windham, New Gloucester, Raymond, Casco, and Poland assisted at the scene.
