Pedestrian dies after being struck by tractor-trailer in South Portland

A news release from the city stated that an investigation determined that the act was intentional by the man who died.

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A pedestrian has died after being struck by a tractor-trailer truck in South Portland Thursday morning. 

South Portland police and fire crews responded to the area of the Budget Inn on Main Street at approximately 8 a.m. for a report saying a tractor-trailer had struck a pedestrian, according to a news release from the City of South Portland. 

The pedestrian was reportedly found in the roadway and was brought to Maine Medical Center with significant injuries. The individual died at the hospital, the release stated. The victim was identified as a 60-year-old male who recently rented a room at the Budget Inn. His name is not being released pending family notification. 

"After conducting interviews, reviewing video footage, reviewing the victim’s personal history, and discovering a note left in his room, investigators determined this event to be an intentional act on behalf of the victim," the city said in the release.

No charges are being filed against the tractor-trailer driver who had struck the victim, according to the city.

The street was closed from Westbrook Street to Cash Corner as a result of the incident, but roads were reopened by 10 a.m., a Facebook post from the department stated.
