SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Possible charges are pending after a driver struck and "seriously injured" a pedestrian, then crashed into a vehicle head on Monday afternoon near the Maine Mall in South Portland.
At approximately 3:30 p.m., South Portland police responded to a crash in the area of Days Inn located at 461 Maine Mall Road, according to a news release from the police department.
Police said an SUV with a male driver struck and seriously injured a female pedestrian while she was sitting in a median, then struck a car that was headed in the opposite direction head-on.
The pedestrian was brought to a nearby hospital and her condition is unknown, police said. The driver of the car that was struck head-on was reportedly brought to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The driver of the SUV was not injured and is cooperating with law enforcement, according to police. Possible charges are pending.
A Falmouth Police Department crash reconstructionist was called to determine the cause of the crash and SUV's condition, police said.
A NEWS CENTER Maine crew at the scene spoke with a person at the hotel who said they saw a person injured and lying on the ground.
Drivers are advised to avoid the area. The road was still closed as of 5:38 p.m.
