Baldwin crash involving car, motorcycle under investigation

Route 113 was closed for about three hours Saturday morning for investigation but has since reopened.

BALDWIN, Maine — The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is investigating a crash that happened in Baldwin Saturday morning involving a car and motorcycle.

At about 8:30 a.m., deputies received reports about a serious crash involving a car and motorcycle on Route 113, also known as Pequawket Trail, in Baldwin, the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

At the scene, an investigation revealed that a red 2014 Mazda operated by 18-year-old Yousif Abbas of Brownfield was being driven at a "high rate of speed" west on Route 113. According to deputies, Abbas was attempting to pass a vehicle traveling in the same direction. When attempting to pass, his vehicle was in the oncoming eastbound lane, traveling into oncoming traffic at the crest of a hill.

Deputies said a 2022 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by 29-year-old Isaiah Reynolds of Hiram was traveling in the eastbound lane when Reynolds tried to avoid the Mazda driven by Abbas.

"Reynolds was unable to avoid the collision due to the Mazda’s speed and it being completely in his travel lane," the release stated.

The Mazda then struck the motorcycle head-on, causing the motorcycle to tumble, ejecting and throwing Reynolds, according to the release. Reynolds was not wearing a helmet when the crash occurred and he sustained "serious injuries." He was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment.

"After colliding with the motorcycle, Abbas’s vehicle left the roadway and rolled over several times," the release said. "Abbas was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and sustained serious injuries as well."

He was also taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment.

Deputies said the causes of the crash include speed, improper/unsafe passing, and driving to endanger.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office Reconstruction Team, Maine State Police, and Gorham Police Department continue to investigate.

The sheriff's office said once the investigation is complete, it will meet with the Cumberland County District Attorney's Office to determine if charges will result from the crash.

Route 113 was closed for about three hours for investigation but has since reopened.

Baldwin Fire, Standish EMS, and Sacopee Valley EMS assisted at the scene.
