State police investigate fatal crash in Howland

A 44-year-old man from Shapleigh died Saturday night after crashing into several trees, officials said.

HOWLAND, Maine — Maine State Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Saturday night in Howland.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday, state troopers responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash on Lagrange Road in Howland, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release Monday.

At the scene, troopers found 44-year-old Cory Macdonald of Shapleigh to be the driver and only occupant of a Jeep Wrangler, the release stated.

According to Moss, the Jeep failed to navigate a corner and went off the road, striking several trees before coming to rest on its side.

Macdonald was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.

"Speed and alcohol are believed to have been factors in the crash," Moss added.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
