SCARBOROUGH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Wal-Mart in Scarborough was evacuated Monday afternoon when a fire alarm was intentionally pulled by the husband of a woman caught shoplifting.
Scarborough police responded to a report from store officials who had a woman in custody for shoplifting and, shortly after, got a second call reporting the fire alarm going off at the department store.
Store officials told police the woman's husband called and threatened them to release his wife, "or else," then proceeded to pull the fire alarm inside Wal-Mart and fled the area in a vehicle.
During a search for the husband, police said he called 911 and the Scarborough Police Department business lines several times, threatening law enforcement and even personally threatening a patrol sergeant in a phone call.
The suspect's vehicle was later found on Payne Road in front of Goodwill, police said, and he was pulled over.
Police arrested 42-year-old Sean Francis of Portland and charged him with false public report and terrorizing. Francis' wife, 41-year-old Marsha Francis was arrested and charged with theft.
Both were transported to Cumberland County Jail.
