SANFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Sanford School department may have to reevaluate some of the classes offered to students in 5th and 6th grade at the Willard School.
Superintendent David Theoharides says the students learn the same academics in the separate classrooms, but without the pressure of the other gender.
ACLU of Maine's legal director, Zachary Heiden, says it segregating the students by gender is not only against the constitution, but also unhealthy for them socially.
The ACLU has sent a letter to the legal advisors of Sanford Schools, demanding Willard School stop offering the separate classes.
The letter is part of the ACLU's nationwide campaign called, "Teach Kids, Not Stereotypes." Heiden says there are a number of schools across the country trying segregated sex classes and this is an effort to stop those classes in their tracks.
Superintendent Theoharides says he hadn't heard of the letter until the media called Monday. He says the school has been very cooperative in providing information to the ACLU since it first called him last year.
He says he'll have to wait to see the letter before any decisions are made.
