RUMFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Heavy rains did some major damage in the town of Rumford Wednesday night, after thunder storms rolled through Maine.
Oxford County dispatch said Thursday that Hall Hill Road, South Rumford Road and Wyman Hill Road in Rumford will be closed for the "foreseeable future." The roads are closed due to storm damage and crumbling pavement. Wednesday's storm flooded roadways and blew over power lines and trees in other parts of town.
Central Maine Power also reported 18,000 customers were without power Wednesday evening as the storms rolled through. That number decreased to approximately 6,000 by midnight Thursday. The utility said it had all its available crews working in Oxford, Piscataquis and Franklin Counties. By 10:00 Thursday morning, there were still 1,701 customers without power.
Lieutenant Keith Bickford with the Rumford Fire Department told NEWS CENTER Wednesday, "There were lot of impassable roads [Wednesday night] though, yes South Rumford Road is impassable, Wyman Hills is closed and Route 2 is down to one lane. Hall Hill Road is also impassable all the way through. They just paved Royal Ave. last summer which is now wiped out."
The storms cleared out by Wednesday evening. Thursday morning crews were working to clean up the damage, but it could take weeks.
