Red Gendron introduced as new Maine hockey coach

ORONO, Maine (AP) - Maine's new hockey coach says one of his goals is to bring home a national championship.

ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Red Gendron "owes" the University of Maine...well in his mind he does.

Gendron got his college coaching start in Orono under legendary Maine Coach Shawn Walsh. Gendon was on Walsh's staff when the University of Maine captured its 1st NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship in 1993. Since then Gendron has been a part of in the NHL, AHL and NCAA. Most recently Gendron was the assistant coach for Yale, last year's NCAA Champions.

Gendron made clear his intention to return the Black Bears to prominence. He promised his teams would be prepared for the battle both on and off the ice.

Dennis "Red" Gendron was formally introduced Tuesday to succeed Tim Whitehead, who was fired last winter after 12 years as head coach.
