Public to weigh in on future of Portland Waterfront

The City of Portland says it's time to talk about the future of the city's busy waterfront.

PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER Maine) – The public will have the chance to weigh in on the future of one of Maine’s busiest waterfronts Tuesday.

The City of Portland is holding a public forum to talk about the continued development of Commercial Street as tensions between the fishing and tourism industries worsen.

The meeting is part of an effort to create an operations and master plan for Commercial Street.

The area has seen continued growth over the years, forcing many fishermen out of prime real estate to make way for condominiums, hotels and office space.

Commercial fishing in Maine raked in nearly $600 million last year, according to the Department of Marine Resources.

Meanwhile, tourism continues to boom statewide surpassing $6 billion in spending.

The City of Portland, Greater Portland Council of Government and engineering consultant, WSP U.S.A., Inc. are holding Tuesday night’s event from 6-8 p.m. at the Portland Public Library.
