York Beach man accused of shooting pellet gun near neighbors and toward boats

"[He] was within 300 yards of his neighbors when he shot the pellet round and shot the same gun at two boats just offshore also within 300 yards," police said.

YORK, Maine — A man from York Beach faces several charges after he allegedly shot a pellet gun near a group of people, who ducked for cover, and toward boats offshore Friday night.

York police responded to a call shortly before 10 p.m. Friday in the area of Long Beach Avenue and Webber Road in York Beach, after a woman called to report that a neighbor "shot a gun in her direction, and she heard it fly past her head," the department said Monday in a news release.

Officers at the scene were able to quickly identify the suspect as 67-year-old David Ricker, who was taken into custody.

Police also were able to determine that Ricker was apparently shooting a high-velocity pellet gun and was in possession of .177 projectile rounds. Police said Ricker was in possession of the Umarex Legends replica of a German MP 40 rifle, which is designed to appear like a real historic firearm.

"[Ricker] was within 300 yards of his neighbors when he shot the pellet round and shot the same gun at two boats just offshore also within 300 yards," police said in the release.

Ricker was charged with terrorizing, a class C felony, and reckless conduct, a class D misdemeanor. He was brought to York County Jail, where no bail was set due to the felony charge.

Police said no injuries or damage were reported at the time of the incident. The case remains under investigation.
