Westbrook man seriously injured in fiery Standish crash

Emergency officials learned on their way to the crash that a person was believed to be trapped inside the vehicle that had since caught fire.

STANDISH, Maine — A man from Westbrook suffered serious injuries in a rollover crash and subsequent vehicle fire that happened late Sunday night in the town of Standish.

Dispatchers with the Cumberland County Regional Communications Center received a call around 11:50 p.m. Sunday about a single-vehicle crash in which the vehicle rolled over and caught fire.

According to a news release from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, emergency officials learned on their way to the crash that a person was apparently trapped inside the burning vehicle and was unable to get out on their own.

Upon arrival, crews were able to get the man identified as 32-year-old Andrew Leeman out of the vehicle after they stabilized it. Leeman was brought to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to officials.

Early investigation and witness reports suggest Leeman was traveling at a high rate of speed when he attempted to pass a vehicle on a sharp turn but ended up veering off the road and crashing into two large rocks, according to the release. Those large rocks were displaced by the crash, and the vehicle landed on its side, trapping Leeman inside before catching fire.

The sheriff's office said speed and alcohol are considered to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation, and charges are pending once the investigation concludes.

The Standish Fire Department assisted the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office in their response.
