Car catches fire at gas pump in Turner

By the time emergency crews arrived at the Rusty Lantern gas station on Route 4, the car was fully engulfed in flames, according to the Turner fire chief.

TURNER, Maine — A dangerous situation unfolded Sunday night in Turner when a vehicle parked at a gas pump became fully engulfed in flames.

The Turner Fire Department was called shortly after 10 p.m., Fire Chief Nicholas Merry told NEWS CENTER Maine.

By the time emergency crews arrived at the Rusty Lanter gas station on Route 4, the Audi was fully engulfed in flames. Employees there deployed a fire-suppression system above the fuel pumps, but it didn't help because the car was already in flames, according to the chief.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze within about 90 seconds. Turner fire was assisted at the scene by Minot's fire department, which brought a tanker in case more water was needed, the chief said.

Officials with the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office also responded to the scene and closed the northbound lane of Route 4, also called the Auburn Road, while crews were working to contain the fire.

No injuries were reported in the fire, and only the gas pump that was near the car was damaged. The other gas pumps are fully operational, according to the chief.

The cause of the fire was not released.
