ORONO, Maine — University of Maine officials issued a warning Tuesday afternoon after a black bear was sighted just off campus.
The black bear was spotted on the bike paths near Witter Farm. The bike paths connect to the back side of campus near the recreation center.
"Please exercise caution if using the bike paths and stay aware of your surroundings," the university said in an announcement. "Do not approach the bear if you do see it."
The announcement said the university's police department is monitoring the area. Further bear sightings can be reported to police at 207-581-4040.
Witter Farm and the majority of the UMaine campus are located on Marsh Island, which is surrounded by water, with the Stillwater River branch on the west side and the Penobscot River branch on the east side.
According to the Maine Fish and Wildlife Service website, Maine is home to the largest population of black bears in the eastern U.S. They're typically most active between April 1 and Nov. 1.
"When natural foods are scarce, especially in the spring or dry summers, bears will venture into backyards and fields in search of easily accessible food such as bird feeders, garbage, grills, and pet foods," the website states.
Unlike grizzly bears, black bears are much smaller and more docile if they don't feel threatened. However, there are important safety tips to keep in mind to ensure best possible outcomes for wild bears if you or your pet cross paths.
