PORTLAND, Maine — Police are investigating after a body was removed Tuesday from the mud flats near the former B&M Baked Beans building in Portland.
Portland police issued a news release Tuesday afternoon saying they received a call around 11:30 a.m. about a possible body spotted in an area under Tukey's Bridge and near the former factory.
NEWS CENTER Maine sent crews to the area around noon and reported seeing emergency response teams remove something from that area and place it in a large black bag.
Police confirmed in the release that they recovered a body from that area.
Portland fire crews assisted police with the response and recovery. Fire Division Chief Sean Donaghue noted it was a high-visibility area, with close proximity to Interstate 295 and the popular Back Cove Trail.
The body was sent to the chief medical examiner's office, where an autopsy would be performed to determine cause of death, according to the release.
No identifying information about the person whose body was recovered was released.
Police ask that anyone with information about the case to contact them at 207-874-8575 or text the keyword PPDME and your message to 847411.
