Woman from Troy dies in head-on collision with tow truck in Unity Township

A woman from Troy was killed following a head-on collision with a tow truck Thursday morning in Unity Township.

KENNEBEC COUNTY, Maine — A woman from Troy was killed following a head-on collision with a tow truck Thursday morning in the Kennebec County community of Unity Township.

Colleen Sullivan, 72, was driving a Honda Accord when she reportedly crossed the centerline on Waterville Road into the path of an oncoming flatbed wrecker that was hauling a front-end loader, Lt. J. Chris Read of the Kennebec County Sheriff's Office shared Friday in a news release.

Emergency crews responded to the scene around 9:45 a.m. A transport helicopter was requested but was unable to respond, according to the release.

Once crews were able to remove Sullivan from the vehicle, she brought by ambulance to Northern Light Hospital with serious injuries, Read said. Sullivan died later that afternoon.

The Kennebec County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by Maine State Police and other local agencies in their response and investigation. Waterville Road was closed for several hours Thursday during crash reconstruction.

Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.

The driver of the tow truck, 51-year-old Brad Rollerson of Belfast, faces two charges unrelated to the crash for having an insecure load and for having an overweight load for the size of the wrecker, according to the release.

The Honda and tow truck were removed from the scene and will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation. No information was provided as to the cause of the crash.
