Suspicious package in Windham prompts shelter-in-place

Police said there is no threat to the public.

WINDHAM, Maine — A suspicious package in the parking lot of an optometry office in Windham prompted a shelter-in-place for local residents, Thursday afternoon. 

Just after noon, Windham police and fire crews responded to a reported suspicious package in the parking lot of Maine Optometry, located at 656 Roosevelt Trail, according to a news release from the Windham Police Department.

The area was secured and local residents and businesses were told to shelter in place as first responders investigated, police said. 

The Portland Police Department and Maine State Police Explosive Teams reportedly also responded to the scene. 

The shelter-in-place was lifted just after 2 p.m. when investigators deemed the item was not dangerous or explosive, police said. 

There is no threat to public safety. 

Police said Route 302 and River Road were closed for roughly one hour while crews responded.
