NEWRY, Maine — A chairlift at Sunday River ski resort in Newry was evacuated due to a "mechanical issue" Thursday morning.
A Sunday River spokesperson told NEWS CENTER Maine the resort's Aurora chairlift was "paused due to a mechanical issue that was identified by the lift operator" at approximately 11:08 a.m.
Safety protocols were immediately implemented by mountain operations, and rope evacuations of guests on the chairlift began roughly 10 minutes later, according to the Sunday River spokesperson.
According to the Sunday River website, the "Aurora Peak Quad #12" lift was flagged on hold for maintenance as of 3:54 p.m. After the completion of the evacuation, an inspection of the stated mechanical issue will commence, then lift operations were expected to resume, the spokesperson stated.
