Norway elementary school reports student hit by vehicle near campus

The incident happened while students were leaving school on Wednesday, according to Guy E. Rowe Elementary School Principal Catherine Bickford.

NORWAY, Maine — An elementary school student in Norway was reportedly struck by a car while in a crosswalk near school grounds, according to school officials. 

In a letter to the community, Guy E. Rowe Elementary School Principal Catherine Bickford addressed the incident that happened while students were leaving school on Wednesday. 

Bickford said the child received immediate medical attention and was brought to a hospital. The child's condition is unknown at this time. 

No further details regarding those involved and reason for the crash were disclosed in the letter. NEWS CENTER Maine has reached out to the Norway Police Department for more information. 

Other Guy E. Rowe Elementary School students were said to have witnessed the incident, according to Bickford. 

"Both witnessing and hearing about such events can be a deeply upsetting experience. Our school counselors will be available tomorrow to provide support to any students who may need to process emotions in a safe, supportive environment," Bickford said in the letter.
