SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Maine marine officials confirmed a great white shark was recently spotted off the coast of Scarborough.
The Scarborough Police Department said in a news release Sunday afternoon the town's marine resource officer was notified of a potential shark sighting by a commercial fisherman on Thursday in the area near Richmond Island.
Scarborough officials said they also received word of two similar sightings on Friday: one from two paddleboarders in the Crescent Beach State Park area and another at Pine Point Beach.
The shark was confirmed to be a great white measuring approximately eight feet in length by the Maine Department of Marine Resources after personal drone video was acquired of the marine animal near the Scarborough and Cape Elizabeth town line.
The public is asked to exercise caution and stay vigilant.
The shark sighting off the Scarborough coastline came at the same time as a great white shark sighting in Biddeford Thursday that led to the evacuation of Middle Beach.
Scarborough Harbormaster and Marine Resource Officer Daryen Granata told NEWS CENTER Maine they are unable to confirm the shark identified in Scarborough is the same great white shark spotted in Biddeford. He noted "the size reports were very similar," however.
