Crash on Route 1 in Woolwich seriously injures several people

The crash happened shortly before 2 p.m. in front of Kennebec Equipment Rentals on Route 1, deputies said.

WOOLWICH, Maine — Several people were injured Tuesday afternoon in a crash on Route 1 in Woolwich.

Deputies responded to several reports about a two-vehicle crash shortly before 2 p.m. on Route 1 in front of Kennebec Equipment Rental in Woolwich, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Kennebec Equipment Rental is located on Route 1 at the intersection of Road B.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies shut down a section of Route 1 to traffic. Deputies said all traffic was detoured to Nequasset and Middle roads.

Early investigation indicated 75-year-old Herbert Siefkin of Williamsburg, Virginia, was driving a 2018 Kia northbound on Road B when he attempted to make a left turn onto Route 1.

At that time, 17-year-old Jacob Ouellette was driving a 2019 Ford Super Duty pickup truck belonging to Jorgensen Landscaping southbound on Route 1. Ouellette was unable to stop in time to avoid the Kia driven by Siefkin, which apparently pulled out in front of him.

The sheriff's office said the two vehicles collided, causing the pickup truck to veer off the roadway and strike a utility support pole.

Siefkin and his passenger, 75-year-old Sharon Siefkin, were both taken to Maine Medical Center with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Ouellette was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick with injuries not considered life-threatening.

"This is the second serious injury motor vehicle accident on U.S. Rt. 1 in Woolwich in the past two weeks," Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry said in the release. "Heavy seasonal traffic can make entry onto the busy highway risky, particularly when crossing over a lane. Speed does not appear to be a factor in this accident. Drivers need to use caution and be patient."

The crash is continuing to be reconstructed and investigated by the sheriff's office.

The Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit, Woolwich Fire/Rescue, Bath Fire and Rescue, and Bath Police Department assisted.

Deputies said Route 1 was reopened to traffic at about 3:20 p.m., but a traffic backup continued for another hour.
