PORTLAND, Maine — A person who was on a scooter when they collided with a police cruiser in Portland is recovering from their injuries.
The crash happened shortly before 10 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Elm Street and Marginal Way.
A sergeant with the Portland Police Department was reportedly traveling onto Marginal Way from Elm Street when a pedestrian on a stand-up electric scooter crashed into the driver’s side of their cruiser, a news release from Portland police said. The sergeant had a green light while traveling through the intersection.
Police said the pedestrian was seriously injured and taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment. The sergeant was not injured.
According to the release, a crash reconstruction team was called to investigate the scene. Maine State Police and crash deconstructionist with Brunswick police assisted.
Initial investigation revealed the cruiser had the right of way. As of Saturday, Maine Medical Center reported the pedestrian's injuries were considered serious but not life-threatening.
Police said charges are not being filed, the pedestrian's identity is not being released.
According to police, Elm Street from Somerset Street to Marginal Way was closed for several hours.
