Three seriously injured in Scarborough crash that caused a 'lengthy closure'

Two adults and one child were brought to a nearby hospital to be treated for serious injuries, police said.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Three people were brought to the hospital for serious injuries following a crash Monday morning that closed a road in Scarborough for several hours.

Emergency officials from Scarborough and several nearby communities responded around 9 a.m. to a crash at the intersection of County Road and Riverwoods Drive.

Police and fire officials said Monday morning to expect a "lengthy closure" along County Road from Hodgdon Road to Broadturn Road at the town line with Buxton.

Two adults from Buxton and a young child, whose residence was not listed, were injured in the crash and were taken to the hospital to be treated, Scarborough police said in a news release.

NEWS CENTER Maine went to the scene, where a sedan and pickup truck appeared to have collided head-on.

Scarborough police Chief Mark Holmquist told NEWS CENTER Maine that early investigation suggests the sedan crossed the centerline and into the path of the oncoming truck, which led to the crash.

Holmquist said part of the investigation was to determine whether the driver of the sedan attempted to illegally pass another vehicle in an area of the road marked with two solid yellow lines.

A woman and a 4-year-old child traveling in the sedan were brought to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries, the chief said, and a man in the truck was brought to the hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening.

A section of County Road was closed for several hours while crews cleared the area and investigated the crash. The road was reopened around 1 p.m.

Scarborough Public Safety was aided by Westbrook fire, Gorham fire, Buxton police, and Maine State Police.

Police ask that any witnesses or anyone with information about the crash to contact Officer Corey Rogers by calling 207-730-4323 or emailing crogers@scarboroughmaine.com.

The crash remains under investigation.
