WOOLWICH, Maine — A woman from Pennsylvania was killed in a head-on collision Thursday night in a crash on Route 1 in Woolwich.
Emergency crews responded around 9 p.m. to a report about a two-vehicle crash on Route 1 near the intersection of Shaw Road, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office said Friday in a news release.
Upon arrival, investigators learned that a driver from Pennsylvania, identified as 24-year-old Margaret Daniel, was traveling north on Route 1 when she apparently attempted to pass several vehicles.
However, during that attempt to pass, she reportedly collided with a vehicle driven by 28-year-old Colby Brown of Old Orchard Beach, who was traveling southbound on Route 1.
Daniel died at the scene, and Brown was brought by helicopter to Maine Medical Center for multiple broken bones, but officials said his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
"Witnesses confirmed to investigators that Daniel’s vehicle was passing several vehicles when the collision occurred and speed is a contributing factor," Sagadahoc County officials said in the release.
The road was closed for about four hours and reopened at 1 a.m. Friday.
Sagadahoc County officials said Deputy Ryan Camarda is investigating the crash, which is being reconstructed by Det. Brian Carlton.
The sheriff's office was aided at the scene by Woolwich Fire and Rescue, and Bath police helped control traffic during the road closure.
