ROCKLAND, Maine — The Rockland Police Department responded to a complaint of an "unknown person" suspected of damaging a propane gas line outside an apartment complex on Main Street, Saturday evening.

Rockland Maine Fire & EMS Department was called to assist regarding a possible gas leak or fire hazard, according to a Monday social media post by the police department.

Police identified and located the person in question.

"After speaking to the subject, who is well known to law enforcement, the subject was taken into protective custody and transported to the Pen Bay Medical Center for a mental health evaluation. The case will be reviewed for possible criminal charges," the post stated.

Police said they are continuing to work with their mental health partners, addressing mental health incidents within the community. The department said mental health is an ongoing concern that takes up "a significant amount of law enforcement resources and time."

"Calls for service involving mental health issues as the primary reason for the call are up approximately 14% year to date (2024 vs. 2023)," the post stated.
