OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — Two pedestrians were hit by a train in Old Orchard Beach on Wednesday, and one of those pedestrians died.
It happened around 11 a.m. near the Amtrak platform on 1st Street. However, the train involved in the crash was owned by CSX Transportation, a CSX spokesperson Austin Staton told NEWS CENTER Maine.
CSX specializes in rail-based freight transportation, according to its website.
According to a news release from the Old Orchard Beach Police Department, first responders were called to the train platform and immediately determined two people had been struck by the freight train, which was traveling north toward Scarborough.
One male was found dead and another male was brought to Maine Medical Center in "critical condition," police said. Two other males at the scene were not injured.
"Upon further investigation it was determined the males were sitting on the train platform prior to being struck by the train. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident," police said.
There were no injuries to the train's crew, according to Staton.
"CSX extends its deepest sympathies to everyone impacted by this tragedy, and we will work on scene to support local law enforcement as they continue to investigate," Staton said.
Maine State Police responded to the scene, along with the Old Orchard Beach police and fire departments and emergency crews from other area towns. The Old Orchard Beach Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from Maine State Police detectives and CSX Railroad police investigators, police said in the release.
Several roadways including Union Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, and Old Orchard Street were closed due to the incident. All affected roads have reopened, police said.
