WESTBROOK, Maine — The body of a boy from Portland was recovered Sunday from the Presumpscot River.
In an update Monday, Westbrook police Chief Sean Lally identified the child as 12-year-old Rachsonbath “Rex” Rasmeya.
Emergency officials began searching for the boy around 4 p.m. Sunday after they were called to a boat launch at 58 Lincoln St. in Westbrook, Lally said. Police said the boy went underwater in the river but hadn't resurfaced.
In addition to the Westbrook police and fire departments, dive teams from the Portland Police Department and Maine Warden Service were deployed in the search.
Around 7 p.m. Sunday, a warden service diver found the child and pulled him from the river near the boat launch. He was taken to Maine Medical Center, where he died, according to Lally.
The state chief medical examiner's office will perform an autopsy to confirm the cause and manner of death.
