PLYMOUTH, Maine — A woman from Plymouth is facing several charges in connection with a "critical incident" Friday that led law enforcement to issue a shelter-in-place in the immediate area during their response.
According to an update shared Monday by the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, dispatchers with the Penobscot Regional Communications Center received a report around 5:20 p.m. about a woman who may be suicidal and was said to have threatened another person with a firearm.
The person who was allegedly threatened by the woman was apparently able to "get control of the weapon," and everyone was able to get out of the house, the news release stated.
The woman, however, did not exit the house.
"As the investigation progressed, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team, Maine State Police Tactical Team, and Penobscot County Criminal Investigation Division members arrived to assist," the Monday release stated.
The sheriff's office issued a shelter-in-place order on their social media page shortly before 8:30 p.m. Friday for what they called a "critical incident" in the area of Rutland Road.
That shelter-in-place was lifted after midnight with an arrest and yellow-flag law process evaluation after law enforcement were granted a search warrant of the residence. The sheriff's office was then granted an expanded search warrant, which allowed them to search nearby, eventually locating the woman in a camper.
Evelyn Melanson, 66, was taken into custody and faces several criminal charges:
- Domestic violence criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, which is a class C felony
- Domestic violence reckless conduct
- Domestic violence assault
Melanson was brought to Penobscot County Jail, but no bail or bond amounts were listed as of Monday afternoon.
