Stolen car involved in hit-and-run in Penobscot County, deputies say

Deputies say the driver of the stolen car left the scene of the crash, and then abandoned the car in Bangor.

BANGOR, Maine — The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office is investigating a hit-and-run crash in Glenburn on Wednesday involving a stolen vehicle.

The Penobscot Regional Communications Center got a call Wednesday about a stolen vehicle from Alton Tannery Road in Hudson, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office.

At around 8 a.m. that same day, deputies responded to a hit-and run crash on Broadway in Glenburn. One of the cars involved left the scene, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies did not say if anyone was injured in the crash.

The car that left the scene was later found abandoned at a store at the intersection of Griffin Road and Ohio Street in Bangor, the sheriff's office said. A witness told deputies that a man was seen leaving the car carrying a guitar and a speaker.

Later that day, the suspect, who deputies identified as 21-year-old Andrew Wright, was found standing near the entrance of the Hope House in Bangor. The Hope House is a low-barrier shelter that also provides services such as recovery care, health care, and mental health care to people who are unhoused.

When Wright was found, police said he was holding the guitar. He allegedly admitted to selling the speaker for drugs in Bangor, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies have charged Wright with theft by unauthorized use, theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, and failure to stop and provide information at a car crash.

The Bangor Police Department assisted in the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office investigation.
