Oxford County officials pull unresponsive man from water in Mexico

Deputies responded to a call around 8 p.m. Monday about a possible drowning in Mexico, where they found a man unresponsive. He was rushed to a nearby hospital.

MEXICO, Maine — Emergency officials in Oxford County conducted a water rescue Monday night in the town of Mexico, where a man was found unresponsive before he was pulled from the water and rushed to a nearby hospital.

Oxford County sheriff's deputies responded to a call around 8 p.m. about a male adult who was possibly drowning, Sheriff Christopher Wainwright said in a news release.

Wainwright said the response was focused along a recreation trail off Intervale Avenue. Maj. Dana Thompson clarified Tuesday that the rescue did not happen at the nearby Swift River but at a swimming spot in the area.

Three responding deputies got into the water to retrieve the man and pulled him out of the water, though the man was unresponsive, according to the release. Deputies then performed CPR and other lifesaving efforts until other rescue personnel, including officials with the Mexico Fire Department, arrived at the scene.

The man, whose identity is being withheld pending an ongoing investigation, was brought to Rumford Hospital for emergency medical care.

"It is unknown at this time if the male subject will survive his injuries," Wainwright said in the release.

Wainwright credited Cpl. Joshua Aylward, Deputy Matthew Steinort, and Deputy Corey Smith for their response, which the sheriff said "significantly contributed to the man's chance of survival."

The incident is under investigation, and the man's condition and extent of injuries were unknown at the time of the release.

The sheriff's office said around noon Tuesday that the incident appeared to be an accident, and they did not have any updates on the man's condition.
