Maine State Police respond to shooting in Peru

Officials say there is no threat to the public, but Maine State Police and the Oxford County Sheriff's Office are continuing to investigate.

PERU, Maine — Maine State Police confirmed on Tuesday night that they responded to a shooting in the Oxford County town of Peru.

Lieutenant Aaron Turcotte said state police began assisting the Oxford County Sheriff's Office around 7:15 p.m. with a shooting that occurred along Route 108 in Peru.

A portion of Route 108 was shut down Tuesday evening and into Wednesday morning, according to a dispatcher with the Oxford County Regional Communications Center. The road reopened around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Classes in RSU 56, which serves the towns of Canton, Carthage, Dixfield, and Peru, were canceled Wednesday due to the incident.

"Good Morning from RSU 56. There will be no school in RSU 56 today, 5/29/24 due to route 108 being closed still from the incident that occurred last night in Peru," the school district posted on its website Wednesday morning. "This closure will not change the last day of school, more information will be coming out later today. Thank you and have a great day."

The road closure stretched from the Main Street and Auburn Road intersection to Valley Road, the Peru Fire Department said in an alert posted on their social media page.

Peru fire urged people to "Use caution!" in a post the agency shared on social media, and Dixfield Fire Company called the situation a "law incident" in regard to the road closure.

Law enforcement officials were also seen off Concord Pond Road near Dickvale Road, where several private residences are located. Police at the location told NEWS CENTER Maine crews it was an active scene. Officials did not confirm whether the two responses were connected.

Maine State police say there was no threat to the public and the investigation is ongoing.
