OLD TOWN, Maine — The director of public safety for the city of Old Town has stepped down from the position.
Scott Wilcox has worked as an officer for 26 years at multiple departments in Penobscot and Kennebec counties, including the Penobscot Nation Police Department, the Waterville Police Department, and the Orono Police Department before joining Old Town, the Old Town Police Department wrote Friday in a post on Facebook announcing his final day.
Wilcox was named police chief for the department in 2015 and then was promoted to public safety director in 2017, overseeing the city's police, fire, and rescue.
"Chief Wilcox has been an incredible leader and mentor to the men and women of Old Town Public Safety," the police department wrote in the post. "He came to work every day to make sure he could see the employees on each shift. There was never a question Chief cared about his employees, and he displayed this in many ways."
The department stated that Wilcox would be making a career change but would continue to serve the community as CEO of the Old Town-Orono YMCA located on Stillwater Avenue in Old Town.
"We are sad to see him go but are happy for the next chapter in his professional career," the department said. "He will do great things for the Old Town community in his new position."
The department shared pictures from the Wilcox's last day as well as a video in the comments of his final radio sign-off.
Old Town Fire and Rescue celebrated Wilcox as well, congratulating him for a "long successful career in public safety" and wishing him well on his next chapter, they shared Friday in a Facebook post.
"His leadership over that time leaves us with a solid foundation of personnel and officer group and excellent equipment to continue to perform our duties," the fire and rescue department also stated.
The YMCA said in a post on their Facebook page that they "can't wait to see [Wilcox] on Monday."
