NORTHWOOD, N.H. — The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office is investigating the circumstances that led a police officer to shoot and kill a man in Northwood Tuesday morning.
A Northwood police officer responded to a home on First New Hampshire Turnpike for a report of domestic violence between a father and his son, 34-year-old Malcolm Burns, New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella said Tuesday in a press release.
When the officer arrived, he went inside the home, and there was a physical altercation between the officer and Burns, Formella said. The officer used deadly force and shot Burns, who died at the scene.
One officer was injured during the incident, but his injuries are not life-threatening, Formella said.
The name of the officer involved in the incident is being withheld pending the conclusion of a formal interview.
There is no known threat to the public in relation to the incident. The New Hampshire Department of Justice and New Hampshire State Police Major Crimes Unit are still investigating exactly what happened.
An autopsy was completed and Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Mitchell Weinberg determined the cause of Burns' death was a single gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to an update Wednesday from New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella. The manner of Burns' death was homicide.
The update Wednesday stated the identity of the officer who used deadly force will not be released until a formal interview happens, which is expected to take place in the coming weeks.
