NORTH BERWICK, Maine — A 4-year-old child died after being struck by an SUV Thursday in North Berwick.
It happened around 4:45 p.m. in the driveway of the child's daycare at 74 Buffum Road, North Berwick police said Monday in a news release.
The child was standing near her father's pickup truck, which was parked in a small parking area halfway up the driveway. A second parent arrived in an SUV and started to park near the pickup truck when the child came out from beside the truck and was hit by the left rear wheel of the SUV, according to police.
When first responders got to the scene, CPR and other life-saving measures had already been initiated. North Berwick Rescue then rushed the child to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, New Hampshire, where she died from her injuries, the release stated.
Police said a chemical test was given to the driver of the SUV as a standard procedure. However, police said they do not suspect the driver was impaired. Police also said there was no indication of any motor vehicle laws having been broken.
As accident reconstructionist from the Kennebunk Police Department also responded to the scene, along with North Berwick Rescue, North Berwick Fire Department, Kennebunk Police Department, and Wells Police Department, according to the release.
The incident remains under investigation by North Berwick police.
