NORTH BERWICK, Maine — A firearm was discovered in a student's backpack Monday at Noble High School in North Berwick, according to school officials.
A search of the student's backpack was conducted shortly before school dismissal when the student was suspected to be in violation of the school's tobacco use and vaping policy, Maine School Administrative District 60 Superintendent Audra Beauvais said in a letter to the parents and guardians that was obtained by NEWS CENTER Maine. It was during that search when the firearm was discovered.
"In collaboration with law enforcement, the firearm was immediately confiscated," Beauvais said in the letter. "At this time, we are not aware of any threat made to a student or staff member."
Beauvais also said this appeared to have been an "isolated incident" and an investigation with law enforcement is ongoing. The student will not be permitted on MSAD 60 properties "in accordance with disciplinary procedures," Beauvais added.
NEWS CENTER Maine has reached out to the school and North Berwick police for comment but has not yet heard back.
MSAD 60 serves the towns of Berwick, North Berwick, and Lebanon, and the eighth-grade class is housed in the high school, according to the school website.
