SACO, Maine — Tuesday marks the annual National Night Out, when law enforcement agencies across Maine and the country host community events to connect with residents, build relationships, and create a safe and happy community.
According to the organization, 20 Maine agencies will be hosting events Tuesday afternoon and evening with activities for kids, free food, movies, demonstrations, and more.
The event began in 1984 as a "community-building campaign" to promote relationships between neighbors, police, and other municipal officials.
Communities like Saco will have representatives from the fire department, parks and rec, wastewater, and other departments available for residents to ask questions or to learn more about their day-to-day responsibilities.
"It's a great time and place to come in and ask questions that you have about really anything having to do with the city, but at its core, it was designed for the interaction between law enforcement and the citizens that live here," Saco police Chief Jack Clements said.
Clements is from Saco but worked as an officer in Las Vegas for nearly two decades before he returned home to Maine. He said he's excited to connect with more city residents in a candid environment to remind them his officers work and live in the community and do what they can to serve its people.
"I would encourage everybody. If your community maybe isn't having [an event], find a community that is and stop in," Clements added.
Saco's Night Out event will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at Thornton Academy. Activities include a dunk tank, obstacle course, raffle prizes, and a free dinner.
