National Safe Boating Week: Safety reminders as Maine heads into Memorial Day weekend

"As of this year, people 25 and younger are required to take a boating safety course," a local boat owner said.

KENNEBUNK, Maine — As the weather warms up and we head into a holiday weekend, many are preparing to take their boats out on Maine’s waters.

With National Safe Boating Week underway, officials are issuing important reminders to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife (MDIFW) emphasizes the critical importance of boating safety.

Each year, boating accidents result in the deaths of 5-10 people in Maine, with 70 percent of these victims not wearing life vests.

As the boating season kicks off, boaters should be aware of new laws.

"As of this year, people 25 and younger are required to take a boating safety course," local boat owner Keith Hafer explained.

This regulation aligns Maine with over 40 other states that have similar laws aimed at preventing accidents on the water.

"Here in the Kennebec River, we often see the harbor master. Out on the ocean, I do see the Coast Guard, although it is less frequent because they have more territory to control," Hafer explained.

MDIFW warns that game wardens may stop boats to ensure safety compliance, particularly the presence of life vests.

Mark Latti, the director of communications for MDIFW, emphasized the department's goals.

"Really, we want people to boat safely and responsibly: obey headway speed laws, drive at reasonable speeds, wear life jackets, register your boat, and don't drink and boat. Follow those simple rules, and you’ll have a great day out on the water," Latti said.

The Hafer family takes boating safety seriously.

"As required, we have one life vest per passenger. Children 10 and younger must wear it. We usually draw that line at 12 years old, and if there’s any passenger not comfortable on the boat, we ask they wear a life jacket," Hafer said.

With Memorial Day approaching this weekend, it's the perfect time to enjoy the warm weather and get out on the water. Be sure to keep in mind the key safety tips: always wear a life vest and ensure your boat is prepared for a safe outing.
