Milo man found dead in structure fire on property where he lived

A fire in Milo is being investigated after a man's body was discovered by crews Sunday morning from a structure on the property where he lived.

MILO, Maine — A fire in Milo is being investigated after a man's body was recovered by crews Sunday morning from a structure on the property where he lived.

Crews with the Milo Fire Department responded to the call around 4:15 a.m. about a structure fire on Elm Street, where what has been described as a free-standing garage or workshop was on fire.

Shortly before 5 a.m., crews reportedly found a body and called the fire marshal's office about the discovery, which is standard procedure, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said Monday in a news release.

Officials have tentatively identified the remains as 76-year-old Dwight Russell, pending official confirmation from an autopsy performed by the chief medical examiner's office. Russell lived in the single-family residence near the structure where his body was found, according to the release.

The fire is being investigated.

Milo's fire department was assisted at the scene by the state fire marshal's office, Milo police, and nearby fire crews from Sebec, Brownville, and Dover.
