BAR HARBOR, Maine — A man was rescued by helicopter Wednesday morning from a very steep section of Beehive Trail in Acadia National Park.
Park rangers responded around 8 a.m. to a report of a 58-year-old man who was experiencing a "serious medical event" on Beehive Trail, according to a news release from the National Park Service.
Park rangers coordinated with MDI Search and Rescue to assemble and stage a group of 16 people at the trailhead on Park Loop Road, the release stated.
Officials determined the man was located halfway up the nearly vertical section of the trail and required the use of a Maine Forest Service helicopter for rescue.
The man was brought by helicopter to a field by Sand Beach where a Bar Harbor Fire Department ambulance then took him to the Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor.
Beehive Trail was closed for roughly one hour while crews responded and reopened around 11 a.m.
The difficult trail is known for its rung and ladder elements and involves steep granite stairs and rock scrambling. The Beehive Loop is 1.4 miles long and ascends a 450-foot cliff with exposed edges.
