Man hit and killed by tractor-trailer truck in Farmington, police say

The 82-year-old man died at the scene. Police said the driver of the truck likely will not face charges.

FARMINGTON, Maine — The Farmington Police Department is investigating a fatal pedestrian crash involving an 82-year-old man and a tractor-trailer truck.

The Franklin County Regional Communications Center first received calls about the crash on Main Street in front of the U.S. Post Office in Farmington at around 10:30 a.m. Monday. The truck involved is owned by MCW Trucking of Durham. The driver was a 26-year-old man from Gray, Farmington police said in a press release.

The driver of the tractor-trailer had stopped for another person in the crosswalk, according to police. The driver began to move forward. At the same time, Robert Leso, of Chesterfield, approached the passenger side, "skirting" around the front of the truck. He was out of view of the driver, police said.

Leso was knocked to the ground and run over by the truck's front tire. Witnesses and the truck driver tried to resuscitate Leso, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police reviewed traffic camera footage and spoke with witnesses. They do not anticipate the driver will face any charges. Police will continue to investigate the crash.

"Please slow down, be patient, be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions. Pedestrians and motorists should always ensure eye to eye contact before proceeding," Farmington Police Chief Kenneth Charles wrote in the press release.

Main Street traffic was diverted in the area for about four hours after the crash.

The Farmington Police Department, Farmington Fire Department, NorthStar Ambulance, Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, and Farmington Public Works all responded to the scene.
