Man dies while hiking in New Hampshire

Members of the man's family and passing hikers tried to help, but life-saving efforts were not successful.

ALBANY, N.H. — A man hiking Piper Trail on Mount Chocorua, located in Albany, New Hampshire, died from a medical emergency Saturday morning.

The 58-year-old from Montreal was nearly two miles from the trailhead when the incident happened, according to a press release from New Hampshire Fish and Game.

Members of the man's family and passing hikers with medical experience tried to help the man.

"He lost consciousness several times and ultimately CPR was performed for over an hour, but unfortunately the life-saving efforts were not successful," the press release stated.

Mount Chocorua has an elevation of 3,490 feet and is one of New Hampshire's most frequently hiked mountains, according to the Chocorua Lake Conservancy website. Round-trip trail options to the summit are over seven miles long and are estimated to take at least six hours to hike.

Conway Fire Department, the U.S. Forest Service, Lakes Region Search and Rescue, and the Carroll County Sheriff's Office assisted conservation officers with the call.
