LIMINGTON, Maine — Two suspects accused of hitting a school bus Friday in Limington before fleeing the scene were still being sought by police on Saturday.
Maine State Police shared an update Saturday to say that the search was ongoing and provide a few more details about the incident.
Shortly before 2:20 p.m., state police and fire crews responded to the area of 419 Sokokis Ave. in Limington for a report of a crash involving a school bus, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.
The school bus was traveling south on Sokokis Avenue before the crash happened.
"As the bus approached Axelsen Road, it began to slow down," the release stated. "The vehicle behind the bus, a 4-door sedan, failed to slow down in time and crashed into the back side of the bus. The damage to both the bus and the sedan was severe and both vehicles had to be towed from the scene."
The two occupants of the sedan, both described as white males who appear to be in their 20s or 30s, exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot into nearby woods. According to Moss, a police dog was brought to the scene to help track the individuals after an article of clothing belonging to one of the suspects was discovered.
Police said that 13 children were on the bus at the time of the crash, but no injuries were reported. It was not confirmed by police which school department owned or contracted the bus nor which school the students attended.
The investigation remains ongoing with criminal charges pending.
